Contraband Arrests at Wilcox State Prison and Augusta State Medical Prison

As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 984 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.

On August 2, at Wilcox State Prison, visitor Magali Garcia was arrested by Wilcox County Sheriff’s Department following visitation with an offender. Security staff conducted a search of the offender’s person, and 2 cell phones were found. After being questioned by the Facility Investigator, visitor Garcia admitted to giving the offender the contraband.  

On August 3, at Augusta State Medical Prison, Nurse Wendy Evans was arrested by Richmond County Sheriff's Office for attempting to enter the facility with contraband. When Nurse Evans reported for duty, the Portal Sergeant noticed a suspicious bulge on her person. Nurse Evans consented to a pat search, and the following contraband was discovered: 1,000 grams of tobacco wrapped in plastic wrap.

On August 5, at Augusta State Medical Prison, visitor Catherine Towry was arrested by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office after she failed to clear the metal detector for visitation. Prior to consenting to be searched, visitor Towry confessed to having a pack of Newport cigarettes.
