Contraband Arrests at Ware and Calhoun State Prisons

As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 989 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.

On September 25, a Lieutenant observed 2 civilians, Melissa Getzendaner and Justin Green, walking in the pecan orchard near Ware State Prison. Upon searching the area, the Lieutenant and two CERT Officers found Getzendaner and Green hiding in the pecan orchard with the following contraband: 20 cell phones and 6 bundles of tobacco weighing 569 grams, all wrapped in black duct tape. A GDC Special Agent procured warrants and arrested Getzendaner and Green for 2 counts each of procuring items that are prohibited by the warden.

On September 25, while performing rounds at Calhoun State Prison, the perimeter officer observed two males in a white car enter the facility parking lot and then abruptly exit. Calhoun County Sheriff's Office was notified and a traffic stop was conducted on Highway 45 in Morgan, Georgia. A search of the vehicle revealed the following contraband: 6 bundles of tobacco, 1 bundle containing 3 cell phones, and 1 bundle containing 5 cell phone batteries, 10 cell phone chargers, and 2 cell phones. All contraband and passengers were secured and transported to the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office.
