As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 704 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
On November 30, 2014 at Autry State Prison, visitor Martha Harrell was observed attempting to drop an undetermined amount of tobacco on her way into visitation. The tobacco was wrapped in saran wrap and hidden within the fingers of visitor Harrellâ€™s gloves. Visitor Harrell was searched and no other contraband was found on her person. Visitor Harrell was arrested by the Mitchell County Sheriffâ€™s Office.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
