Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 659 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1. On May 4, 2014, a suspicious vehicle was stopped near Georgia State Prison by Tattnall County Sheriff's Office. A search of the vehicle was conducted and three (3) black stockings containing thirty-five (35) bundles of individually wrapped tobacco was found. Both passengers of the vehicle, Sharee Valentine and Lashonda Fisher indicated that they had been in communication with an inmate from Georgia State Prison regarding the contraband drop. Both Valentine and Fisher were arrested by Tattnall County Sheriff's Office.
2. On May 3, 2014 at Telfair State Prison, staff was informed that visitor Jodi Bridges would attempt to bring marijuana into the facility by hiding the contraband in her person. Because of the information received, visitor Bridges was asked to consent to a search. Bridges refused consent of the search and the Telfair County Sheriff's Department and K-9 unit were called to the scene to search Bridges' vehicle. The search yielded the following: a bundle of tobacco wrapped in black electrical tape, one roll of black electrical tape, a bag of balloons and $1,000.00 in cash. Visitor Bridges then admitted to having more bundles on her person and consented to a strip search. During the search, Bridges removed two (2) additional bundles wrapped in black electrical tape in her person. Bridges told staff that she thought the bundles contained both tobacco and marijuana; stating the bundles were already wrapped when she picked them up from an unidentified person near her home. Visitor Bridges was arrested by the Telfair County Sheriff's office. The total weight for the items confiscated was 138 grams of tobacco and 34 grams of marijuana.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
