As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 656 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1. On April 17, 2014, staff of Augusta State Medical Prison (ASMP) were notified of an arrest of civilian Troy Hart who had attempted to drop off contraband at Georgia Regents University (GRU). Hart had intention to deliver the contraband (approximately five pounds of marijuana and rolling papers) to an inmate housed at ASMP, whom is seeking medical care through GRU. Troy Hart was arrested by the GRU Campus Police.
2. On April 15, 2014 Wrens City Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle. During the traffic stop it was found that the driver and three passengers had the following in their possession; one lbs. of marijuana, 20 cell phones, and an undetermined amount of cocaine and Ecstasy. The individuals admitted that they were en route to Washington State Prison to make a contraband drop. The driver and passengers of the vehicle; Andre Barnes, Fredrick Clark, Gabrielle Coleman, and Dequavis Woodard were arrested by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
