As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 543 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1) On July 29, 2013 at Telfair State Prison, Nurse Ruth Kitchens was being searched at the entry building. The bunker officer observed a cellphone wrap under Kitchens' blouse. She consented to a search and two one gallon bags and one quart bag of tobacco were found under a bandage wrapped around her waist. Kitchens was arrested by the Telfair County Sheriff's Department.
2) On July 31 2013, at Rogers State Prison, Tattnall County Sheriff's Deputies, and Reidsville Police Officers were conducting license checks at the bridge on Highway 147. A gray vehicle approached the check point. A Deputy asked the driver, civilian Kristen Daniel for her license. The Deputy noticed that the front seat passenger, civilian Aaron Modenssi-Duffy was acting nervous. Underneath the front passengers seat deputies found a black trash bag containing 47 packages of tobacco wrapped in black electrical tape. Daniel and Modenssi-Duffy were arrested.
3) On July 31, 2013 at Calhoun State Prison, Officers were conducting searches of vehicles. While conducting the search, a bag containing three cellphones, two touch screen cellphones, 1/4 ounce of marijuana, four small bundles wrapped in black electrical tape containing tobacco and three small bundles of tobacco packed in wrap each weighing one ounce were found in Officer Elliot Harvey's vehicle. The Calhoun County Sheriff's office was notified and Officer Harvey was arrested.
4) On August 3, 2013 at Georgia State Prison with the assistance of K-9, Tattnall County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia State Patrol conducted visitor searches. Visitor Lawrence Loud was arrested by the Tattnall County Sheriff's Office for possession of marijuana. The marijuana was found inside his vehicle during a K-9 search. In a separate incident, visitor Gwendolyn Vail was arrested for possession of marijuana. When Vail was questioned she admitted to having it on her person. Vail had 28 grams concealed in her undergarments. Vail was arrested by the Tattnall County Sheriff's Office.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
