Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities

As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 517 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.

1) On June 8, 2013 at Hancock State Prison, when visitor Diadra Nelson entered the prison officers noticed a strong smell of THC. Nelson consented to a strip search and no contraband was found on her person. While Nelson was in the visitation area she began to exhibit suspicious behavior. After the inmate arrived she stated she needed to go to the restroom. The visitation supervisor went into the restroom after Nelson left and found a medium size ball of toilet paper that did not flush. The ball of toilet paper was retrieved and officers found 14 small baggies, ten of which contained THC and four of tobacco. The Hancock Sheriff Office was called and Nelson was arrested.

2) On June 9, 2013 at Autry State Prison, visitor Demetrice Davis couldn't clear the metal detector. Davis consented to a search. The officer discovered tobacco wrapped in clear plastic on her person. The officer notified the Mitchell County Sheriff Office. Davis was arrested and taken into custody.

3) On June 9, 2013 at Macon State Prison, visitor Skyla Fritiz was caught passing contraband to an inmate during visitation. Fritiz was observed passing three balloons with crystal meth. Fritiz was arrested by the Macon County Sheriff Department.

The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
