As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 497 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1) On May 6, 2013 at Wilcox State Prison, an officer observed Officer Matthew Kangas go into the control room bathroom and came out with his shirt tail out. The officer went into the bathroom and observed loose tobacco on the floor. The officer notified the Shift Lieutenant who then checked the control room bathroom. The Lieutenant found 3.25 oz of tobacco in the trash can. When questioned, Officer Kangas admitted he had been paid $300 on a green dot card by an inmate to bring in the tobacco. Officer Kangas was arrested by the Abbeville Police Department and was taken to the Wilcox County Jail.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
