As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 444 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1) On January 5, 2013, visitor Sharon Couch to Calhoun State Prison could not a clear the metal detector. Upon questioning, she removed some cooked ham from her person. A search of her vehicle found several balloons of tobacco. She then removed a candy bar wrapper from on her person containing seven bags of tobacco. Couch was arrested by the Calhoun Sheriff's Office.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
