Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 440 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1) On December 23, 2012, during visitation at Telfair State Prison an inmate was observed removing an object from the rear pocket of his visitor, Candice Barrett, and dropping it in a camera bag. The object was retrieved by the Sergeant on duty and found to be 2.8 oz. of marijuana. The Helena Police Department was contacted, and she was placed in their custody.
2) On December 23, 2012, visitor Garcio Smith arrived at Autry State Prison to visit an inmate. Officers noticed her odd behavior, and she consented to a search. Three taped up bundles of marijuana were found on her person. She was transported to the Mitchell County Jail by the Sheriff's Office.
3) On December 25, 2012, visitor Sierra Eason at Coffee Correctional Facility was found with 12 small bags of what appeared to be marijuana. Upon questioning, she turned over a candy bag containing 15 more bags of marijuana. She was arrested by the Nichols Police Department.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
