Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities

As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 733 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.

  1. On May 2, 2015, at Telfair State Prison, Officer Labaron Hughes was attempting to enter the facility when staff noticed a smell of marijuana on his person.  Staff searched Hughes’ person and found the following contents within a cup of noodles in his possession: 66 grams of tobacco, 68 grams of marijuana, and 19 grams of crystal meth. Hughes’ vehicle was also searched and the following contents were confiscated: 9mm handgun and ammunition, nine cellphones, $494 cash, 6 bags of marijuana found in a lock box and two bags of marijuana found within a soap dish (total weight of 98 grams), and one digital scale. Labaron Hughes was arrested by the Telfair County Sheriff’s Office and charged with crossing a guard line with contraband, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
