As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 718 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
- On February 14, 2015 at Central State Prison, visitor Joann Smith entered the facility and attempted to clear the metal detector. The detector alerted and after visitor Smith consented to a search, a piece of paper was observed sticking out from her waistband. A bag containing approximately three ounces of chewing tobacco was discovered in the front of her pants. Visitor Smith was arrested by Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputies.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
