Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 688 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
On September 3, 2014, visitor Otyonye Vincent arrived at Autry State Prison to visit an inmate. A cell phone was observed on his person and the front entry officer advised him he would have to take it back to his vehicle. Officers then conducted a search of his briefcase and found tobacco in three different sealed packages. Visitor Otyonye insisted that someone else packed his briefcase. In addition, Visitor Otyonye pulled a second cell phone from his waistband. A total of three packages of tobacco, two cell phones, and a $46.00 check which was addressed to the inmate he was visiting were recovered. Visitor Otyonye was arrested by Mitchell County Sheriff’s deputies.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
