Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 672 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
- On June 26, 2014 at Georgia State Prison, Store Clerk Mirjam Ward confessed to staff that she had considered bringing tobacco into the facility that day but had decided against it. Investigations was notified and during questioning Ward admitted to bringing in tobacco on two different occasions. Ward's home, which was located on prison property, was searched and six packages of tobacco were found inside the home. The Tattnall County Sheriff's Office arrested Ward for bringing contraband across the guard line.
- On June 29, 2014 at Dooly State Prison, staff noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from Officer Akendolyn Westbrook. Officer Westbrook was searched and they discovered two bundles of marijuana weighing 8.6 ounces hidden under her bra. A search of her car revealed three cell phones, five money cards, and $100. Officer Westbrook was arrested by Dooly County Sheriff deputies.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
