Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities

As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 664 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.

  1. On May 14, 2014 at Telfair State Prison, a tower officer observed a black male dressed in all black run up to the perimeter fence. The Officer contacted authorities and the Telfair County Sheriff's Office responded. Officers arrested the male, Oyeamon Norris, as well as the female driver involved in the contraband throw over, Jasmine Smedley. Officers recovered five bundles by the perimeter fence and three bundles inside the trunk of the car. The bundles recovered contained a total of 27 cellphones, 13 chargers, three SD cards, approximately 4 lbs of tobacco and one lighter. Civilians Norris and Smedley were arrested by the Telfair County Sheriff’s Office.
  2. On May 18, 2014 at Macon State Prison, Officer Joshua Williams attempted to introduce contraband into the facility. Contraband was hidden inside four Pepsi bottles and contained 46 grams of marijuana, 3.4 grams of a white powder, three cell phones and rolling papers. Officer Williams was arrested by the Macon County Sheriff’s Department.

The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
