As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 627 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1) On February 23, 2014, Telfair State Prison staff noticed a female, carrying two bags, running towards the back of the spray field on prison property. The Telfair County Sheriff's Department was contacted and responded to the scene. Authorities apprehended the female, Maria Terrell, and stopped and searched a vehicle parked on a dirt road where Terrell was headed. Prescription drugs were found on the driver, Vila Nounay. Contraband found in the two bags Terrell was carrying contained eight bundles wrapped in t-shirts, electrical tape and cellophane. The bundles contained ten cell phones, ten chargers, eight hacksaw blades, one Gerber knife, 461 grams of tobacco, 43 grams of suspected methamphetamine, four hypodermic needles, three lighters, four tubes of Super glue, four tubes of Gorilla glue, one screwdriver bit set, one pack of cigarettes, nine rolling papers, ten tubes of JB weld, 45 sewing needles , four SD cards, four plastic baggies, nine tank tops, eight t-shirts, 11 pairs of ankle socks and two handkerchiefs. Maria Terrell and Vila Nounay were both placed under arrest by the Telfair County Sherriff's Department and charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent, crossing the guard line and items prohibited without the consent of the Warden.
2.) On February 23, 2014, visitor Rhonia Starks' car was found to be unsecured in the visitor parking lot of Rogers State Prison. Staff searched the vehicle and found approximately two ounces of marijuana and 10 balls of tobacco inside a McDonald's bag located in the back seat of the car. Visitor Starks was placed under arrest by the Tattnall County Sherriff's Department.
3.) On February 23, 2014 staff from the Women's Probation Detention Center witnessed visitor Ty Mealy drop something over the fence at the Center. Staff searched the area and discovered 54 grams of tobacco and one rolling paper. The Evans County Sheriff's Department was called and visitor Mealy was placed under arrest.
4.) On February 22, 2014, a shakedown of visitation was conducted at Calhoun State Prison. The K-9 team alerted staff on a vehicle driven by visitor Davis Williamson. Visitor Williamson advised the staff that he had a small amount of marijuana and a pipe in a cigarette package on his person. The car was searched and passenger Angela Williamson was found to have several pills within a pill bottle containing Tylenol 3, Percocet, Adderall, Oxycodone, and Vyvanse on her person. Visitor Davis Williamson was placed under arrest by the Calhoun Sherriff's Department for driving while under the influence of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Visitor Angela Williamson was placed under arrest by the Calhoun Sherriff's Department for possession of narcotics.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
