Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 578 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1) On October 10, 2013 at Wilcox State Prison, Dodge State Prison K-9 unit assisted in a check of the parking lot. K-9 alerted them to three vehicles. Officers found marijuana, $1,143 in cash and three cell phones in Officer Rontavious Ford's vehicle. Officers found 9.58 ounces of tobacco in Officer Marcus Hunter's vehicle and officers found 3.3 grams of marijuana in Cadet Corey Wilcox's bag. All officers were arrested by Wilcox County Sheriff's Office.
2) On October 19, 2013 at Johnson State Prison, an Officer observed visitor Juanita Foster give an inmate a small clear bag. The inmate was searched and officers recovered the small clear bag which contained methamphetamine. Visitor Foster was arrested by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.
3) On October 20, 2013 at Smith State Prison, Correctional Officer Cheandton Patterson entered the Front Entrance acting suspiciously. During the entry process, Officer Patterson was instructed to remove the lid of her drink cup and stir her cup with a straw. Officer Patterson complied but the Sergeant could not see the bottom of the cup. She was instructed to walk through the metal detector with her cup. The metal detector went off and she was questioned by the Sergeant on duty. Officer Patterson stated the cup contained two cell phones. Two Lieutenants were called to assist Portal Security. The cup lid was removed and four packages taped with black electrical tape were remove from the cup. The Glennville Police Department was contacted and the packages were opened revealing two cell phones, one blue tooth device and 0.25 pounds of marijuana. Upon search of Officer Patterson's vehicle, three cell phones and three green dot cards were found.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
