Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 537 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1) On July 28, 2013 at Telfair State Prison, visitor Jailey Fanning was asked to submit to a search of her person after visitation officers smelled marijuana. She refused and was escorted out of the facility. Visitor Fanning's vehicle was searched and a small package of marijuana was found. Telfair County Sheriff's Office was notified and visitor Fanning was arrested.
2) On July 28, 2013 at Telfair State Prison, when visitor Shirka Cobb entered the visitation room, officers smelled marijuana on her person. Visitor Cobb consented to a search and officers found nine balloons of marijuana on her person. Telfair County Sheriff's Office was notified. Prior to their arrival, visitor Cobb states she rode to the facility with someone else. She advised them that this individual was Clint Waltower. Clint Waltower was at the facility to visit another inmate. Officers search visitor Waltowers vehicle and his person and found six cell phones and eight green dot cards. Visitors Cobb and Waltower were arrested by the Telfair County Sheriff's Office.
3) On July 28, 2013 at Georgia State Prison, visitor Shameka Hall was observed passing contraband to an inmate during visitation. The visitation officer watched visitor Hall reach into her undergarment and place the item in a potato chip bag. The officer retrieved the bag and 24.2 grams of marijuana was found. Visitor Hall was arrested by the Tattnall County Sheriff's Office.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
