Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 526 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1) On June 25, 2013 at Telfair State Prison, during inmate transfers an inmate was removed from the holding unit to meet with Officer Byron Mcrae. When the inmate returned to his dorm, he was checked for contraband. The inmate was found to be in possession of a net bag containing 12 bundles of tobacco wrapped in electrical tape. An investigator was dispatched to Telfair State Prison and Officer Mcrae was arrested by the Telfair County Sheriff's Office and charged with violation of oath of office and trading with inmate.
2) On June 26, 2013 at Dooly State Prison, volunteer Dianne McDowell was discovered entering the facility with 13 cell phones, 13 chargers, 13 batteries and three packs of rolling paper. The contraband was discovered hidden inside soap that she was bringing into the facility as donated items. McDowell was arrested by the Dooly County Sheriffs Office.
3) On June 29, 2013 at Johnson State Prison, an inmate went into the visitation area and was found to have the following contraband under his shirt: 20 single cigarettes, 2 CDs and approximately an ounce of marijuana in a potato chip bag. The inmate's visitors Maranzy Thomas and Tiyon Combs were arrested by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
