Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 473 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1) On February 27, 2013 at Georgia State Prison, Contract Nurse Schmeka Kennedy was arrested by the Tattnall County Sheriff's Department for personal dealings. Officers found a cell phone on an inmate with text messages from Nurse Kennedy and later found a cell phone in her vehicle which matched the text messages on the inmate's phone. Nurse Kennedy admitted that she had been texting the inmate, bringing him contraband and had been receiving money from a Green Dot card.
2) On February 28, 2013 during the evening shift change at Telfair State Prison, one of the K9 units alerted officers to the vehicle belonging to Officer Willie Clemons. A search of the vehicle produced four one-gallon zip lock bags full of tobacco. Each bag weighed approximately one pound. Officer Clemons was taken into custody by the Helena Police Department.
3) On February 28, 2013 at Lee Arrendale State Prison, Officer Darrius Mayfield's vehicle was searched. Officers found a 9mm loaded pistol and a cell phone. A warrant has been taken out against Officer Mayfield charging him with the introduction of contraband into the facility.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
