As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 457 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1) On February 2, 2013, an inmate at Johnson State Prison was found with marijuana, tobacco and pills on his person after a shakedown of the visitation room. Upon questioning, it was revealed that visitor Caress Underdue brought the contraband to the inmate. Underdue was arrested by the Johnson County Sheriffï¿½s Department.
2) On February 3, 2013, Valdosta State Prison Visitor Donald Merck was caught by staff passing THC to an inmate. Merck was arrested by Lowndes County Sheriffï¿½s Office.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
