Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 416 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1) On October 28, 2012, Visitor Kierra Jones Blasko was visiting an inmate when a Hancock State Prison observed the inmate eating an unidentified item from a chip bag. The officer approached the inmate and confiscated the bag. Inside the bag two small balloons which contained a green leafy substance was found. Visitor Blasko was detained and the Hancock County Sheriff's Office was notified. A search of the visitor's vehicle revealed a cigar style cigarette. Substances confiscated tested positive for THC. Visitor Blasko was taken into custody.
2) On November 2, 2012, after Valdosta State Prison Officer Polite returned from his break he could not clear the metal detector at the Annex Main Control. Two CERT officers were notified and conducted a pat search. They discovered eight (8) bundles of marijuana wrapped in electrical tape inside his waistline, two (2) cigarette lighters and one (1) pack of cigarettes. Officer Polite was arrested by the Lowndes County Sheriff's Department.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
