Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities

As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 414 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.  

1) On October 28, 2012, Civilians Eva Blunt and Lashonda Jefferson were stopped on Joe Kennedy Farm property at Rogers State Prison with 12 packages of tobacco. Former Offender James Mahoney was also discovered in the nearby woods. All three were arrested by the Toombs County Sheriff 's Department.

2) On October 29, 20012, Autry State Prison Correctional Officer Troy Smith was arrested by the Mitchell County Sheriff�s Office. Officer Smith attempted to enter the facility with 2 blue tooth charging devices and admitted his intentions to bring them to an offender. A search of his vehicle revealed: 12 bags of tobacco, 1 bag of marijuana, rolling papers, 3 additional blue tooth charging devices, 5 cell phone ear plug devices and 2 rolls of tape.

3) On October 29, 2012, Civilians Michelle Elder and Glenderius Gorham were stopped by the Nicholls Police Department near the Coffee Correctional Facility. The police found 7 cell phones and charges, 2 bundles of tobacco, a package of crystal meth and a package of Xanax in the vehicle. The civilians admitted to being in the area with the intentions of dropping off the contraband at Coffee CF. They were arrested by the Nichols Police Department.

The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
