Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities

As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 379 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state. ​​​​​​​

 

1) On September 2nd, Officer LaTerrance Casey reported that he had been involved in illegal activity on the job at Augusta State Medical Prison. Officer Casey further stated that he had brought tobacco into the facility on several occasions in exchange for money from an inmate. Officer Casey was arrested by the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

2) On September 9th, Visitor Rasheed Jackson attempted to introduce contraband consisting of 3.7 ounces of marijuana, 3 ounces of tobacco, and 0.8 ounces of rolling paper into Macon State Prison. Visitor Jackson was arrested by the Macon County Sheriff's Department.

3) On September 9th, Visitors Latoya Johnson and Kemnesha Ferguson were removed from the Smith State Prison visitation area after officers noted an inmate placing items in his boot. The inmate was searched and two (2) white bottles containing tobacco and marijuana and five (5) small bundles of clear plastic bags wrapped in a paper towel were found. The Glennville Police Department searched visitor Johnson's vehicle and found three (3) rolls of tobacco, two (2) rolls of clear masking tape and three (3) cellphones with text messages. Visitors Johnson and Ferguson were arrested by the Glennville Police Department.

The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
