Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
1) On May 5, 2012, Visitor Joanie Carter was arrested by the Glennville Police Department after attempting to introduce contraband into Smith State Prison. Nine (9) balloons were confiscated. Three (3) balloons contained a white powdery substance which appeared to be cocaine and six (6) balloons contained a green leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana.
2) On May 6, 2012, a Telfair State Prison Officer observed an inmate put what appeared to be a blue balloon in his mouth from a chip bag. Officers confiscated the bag and the bag contained six balloons of marijuana. Visitor Melvin Johnson, brother of inmate, admitted to bringing in the contraband. He was arrested by the Telfair County Sheriff's Office.
3) On May 6, 2012, two (2) unidentified subjects were observed behind Telfair State Prison near the maintenance shed and wastewater ponds. Staff responded and both subjects attempted to flee. One (1) subject was apprehended. The subject was identified as Christopher Montes-Castro. During a search, two (2) backpacks filled with contraband and a pair of bolt cutters were found. Officers reported that the six foot barrier fence had been cut near the ponds. Contraband found inside the backpacks contained 43 cell phones, 41 cell phone chargers, 24 packs of rolling papers, three (3) hacksaw blades, one (1) digital scale and nine (9) pounds five (5) ounces of tobacco. Montes-Castro was arrested. The second subject was not found.
4) On May 6, 2012, Visitor Clifton Jenkins was arrested by the Glennville Police Department for attempting to bring in contraband into Smith State Prison. Officers confiscated Jenkins' backpack and found 15 cell phones, less than an ounce of marijuana, two (2) SIM cards, several Dremel grinder discs and a half gallon bag of tobacco.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
