Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities

On Sunday, June 26, 2011, Daniel Downing was arrested in Hancock County. He was stopped by the sheriff's department for speeding near Hancock State Prison in Sparta. Downing, a parolee, told authorities he was picking up someone who left contraband at the facility. Earlier that day, officers saw someone trying to throw footballs over the fence. The footballs contained cell phones, chargers, tobacco and other contraband items. The person responsible has not been caught.

The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
