Whitworth Women’s Facility hosts graduation

BASICS World of Work Program

FORSYTH, Ga. – On March 10, 55 offenders graduated from the BASICS (Bar Association Support to Improve Correctional Services) World of Work Program at Whitworth Women’s Facility (WF) in Hartwell, Georgia. BASICS World of Work is an offender rehabilitation program sponsored by the BASICS Committee of the State Bar of Georgia.

“We are grateful for our partnership with the State Bar of Georgia’s BASICS Committee,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier, “Through this program, offenders are able to gain invaluable job readiness skills to prepare them for a career in the business field.”

BASICS Work of Work came to Whitworth WF in 2016, graduating a total of 57 offenders in June, 2016. The 10-week course assists the female offenders in their successful reentry, through skills training in business education, resume writing, interviewing, work ethics, and financial stability. The program also provides employability counseling, which stresses the importance of personal development.

The course concludes with a final project, where the participants are sectioned into groups, and each group presents a mock business plan that must include the organizational, marketing, and financial management components of business. The presentations are made before a panel of judges.

Upon completion, offenders receive a BASICS World of Work certificate from the State Bar of Georgia Committee Leadership. For more information on the BASICS World of Work program, visit: http://bit.ly/2nqYPOm.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
