New Director of the Office of Professional Standards named

Clay Nix Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier announced the promotion of Clay Nix to Director of Office of Professional Standards (OPS) effective May 16, 2017. As Director, Nix will oversee the Internal Investigations Unit, Offender Affairs/Ombudsman Unit, Intelligence Unit, Compliance Unit, and Apprehension Unit, and PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act). OPS protects and serves the public, employees and offenders by gathering information, examining operations, and enforcing departmental standards and laws through audits and investigations and recommending solutions.

“Clay has been a dedicated member of the OPS team for the past 4 years and has an extensive law enforcement background,” said Commissioner Dozier. “He has been performing in the role as interim OPS director since the promotion of Ricky Myrick, and has done an outstanding job in continuing the great work being done in the OPS division.”

Nix began his law enforcement career in 1989 as a jailer with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, where he also served as a radio operator. In 1993, he was hired by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) as a Narcotics Agent. Clay was promoted to Special Agent with the GBI, in 1996, and was assigned to the Atlanta Regional Office. In 2005, Clay accepted a position with the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office as a Senior Investigator working white collar crime, police use of force incidents, and high-end fraud cases. In 2008, he was promoted to Deputy Chief Investigator of the Special Investigations Unit of the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office. He remained at DeKalb County until 2013, when he joined the GDC as Inspector in charge of all OPS Investigative and Intelligence Units. He was promoted to Deputy Directory of OPS in July 2016, where he currently serves.

Nix holds a bachelor’s degree in Justice Administration and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University. He is a graduate of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College. He is also a Member of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, Georgia Gang Investigators Association and serves on the Board of the Georgia Internal Affairs Investigators Association.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
