GDC Officials Host Family Day at Agency Headquarters

More than 500 family members and friends attend

FORSYTH, Ga. – On April 21, the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) hosted Family Day for over 500 family members and friends of GDC offenders.  The purpose of the event was for family members to meet with Departmental representatives and discuss issues concerning the incarceration of their love ones. Representatives from the State Board of Pardons and Parole also attended the event to address parole issues.

“Family Day is part of the Department's continuing efforts to provide customer service to the families of offenders in the GDC system,” said Commissioner Dozier. “We are thankful to Pardons and Parole for joining us, allowing us to comprehensively address the concerns of all who attended.”

Commissioner Dozier and GDC representatives from Facilities, Administration, Inmate Services, Offender Administration, Heath Services, and the Ombudsman’s Office were present to address family member’s questions and concerns. For those interested in asking parole related questions, the State Board of Pardons and Parole had parole hearing examiners available.

GDC hosts this event each quarter in various regions of the state. For updates on upcoming dates, visit www.gdc.ga.gov or check out the Agency’s Facebook and Twitter.

In addition to Family Day, Corrections has an Office of the Ombudsman and Family Advocacy, which has been able to assist a number of families with inquiries and concerns through telephone and e-mail contact. If you are unable to resolve a situation or concern through a local prison facility, please contact the Ombudsman's office directly at (478) 992-5358 or ombudsman@gdc.ga.gov.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
