Five Female Detainees Complete Understanding Dad Program

Arrendale TC hosts ceremony and family day

FORSYTH, Ga. – On May 13, five female Arrendale Transitional Center (TC) detainees completed the evidence based Understanding Dad program through the National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI), sponsored by the Department of Health Services’ Department of Child Support Services and TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). Following the presentation of certificates, the mothers enjoyed time with their children at Mitchell Gailey Park in Baldwin, Ga.

“We are grateful to our partners at the National Fatherhood Initiative, the Department of Health Services and TANF, for providing and sponsoring this program,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. “The Department offers this voluntary program to mother’s who are eager to strengthen their communication skills and enrich their children’s life.”

The Understanding Dad program seeks to help mothers improve their relationship with the father of their children. The program stresses the importance of involving dad in their children's lives, and teaches detainees how to better communicate with the father, for the benefit of their children. The program also encourages self-awareness and helps improve communications skills.

The program consists of eight, two-hour sessions, and the following topics are addressed: My Life as a Mom, My Father's Impact, My Mother's Impact, Me and My Children's Father, The Impact on My Children, Patterns of Communication, Open, Safe Communication, and How to Listen.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
