5 Detainees Return to Society

Detainees graduate from Residential Substance Abuse Treatment program  at Appling ITF

FORSYTH, GA For many, the struggle with addiction is a long one that often leads to prison. For five graduates of the Georgia Department of Corrections’ Residential Substance Abuse program at Appling Integrated Treatment Facility, prison has provided an opportunity to live life free from the chains of addiction. On February 3, the facility honored these five detainees with a graduation ceremony.

“We are proud of these men for taking this opportunity and allowing us to assist them with their rehabilitation,” said Commissioner Bryson. “A truly successful day for them as well as our agency; not only did they complete the program, they have been released back into their communities with their families.”

This three-phase, nine-month program is a cognitive behavioral therapy course, implemented in a therapeutic community, in conjunction with our partners at Spectrum.  Each phase is comprised of a separate curriculum, to include classes such as Therapeutic Interventions, Substance Abuse Education, Psycho Education, Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment, and Relapse Prevention.  Detainees are required to complete a progression worksheet for each phase.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
