4th Annual Family Education Open House

Walker State Prison hosts open house for offenders and families

FORSYTH, GA On March 4, Walker State Prison hosted a Family Education Open House for the fourth year in a row. The open house provides a day where family and friends have an opportunity to learn about classes and electives their loved ones are participating in while incarcerated.

“It is amazing to know that a total of 952 people to include volunteers, inmates and family attended this event to show support for the offenders at Walker State Prison,” said Commissioner Bryson. “Not only will this have a positive impact on these offenders, it will encourage the teachers and volunteers who work at the facility as well.”

The Family Education Open House started in 2012. It is one of two family events hosted every year at Walker State Prison. The Association of State Correctional Administrators (ASCA) reentry best practices states that families must to be involved in their loved ones’ education. Additionally, teaching families about programs they are involved in is a mandated part of Faith and Character based programs. The ultimate goal is to reduce recidivism through family involvement.

This event is a chance for families to spend quality time with their loved ones and learn about the different programs their loved ones are involved in.

In addition, during the open house, families and offenders are treated to performances, face painting, dancing, and singing. Prior to the event, the offenders prepared artwork, created puppets and wrote scripts for a puppet shows, and gathered educational information to share with their families.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
