First class of graduates receive High School diplomas at Burruss CTC

24 students graduate from Foothills Charter High School

FORSYTH, Ga. Twenty-four young men housed at Burruss Correctional Training Center received their high school diploma after completing the Foothills Charter High School program on June 23, in Forsyth, Ga.

“This is the first time in our history, that we have had a class of male offenders graduate with high school diplomas,” said Commissioner Bryson. “I am grateful for our partners at Foothills for affording us with this opportunity to improve the lives of our offenders through education.”

The Foothills Charter High School program officially opened on September 17, 2015. This program is the second within the Georgia prison system; the first was established at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto, Ga. Prior to 2015, GDC could only provide offenders GED programming. Now, GDC has the ability to offer offenders, under the age of 21, the chance to obtain a high school diploma through a partnership with Foothills Charter High School.

Next Thursday, June 30, the agency will host a graduation for the second graduating class at Lee Arrendale State Prison.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
